Valtellina is an intriguing region of Lombardia near the border of Switzerland. Wine there? Yes and very good wine indeed.
Vineyard, almost exclusively Nebbiolo variety, are facing south and planted on terraces, small portion of land literally stolen from the mountains.
The result is a wine elegant, introspective, mineral yet extremely drinkable and long lasting.

And now some quick notes...

Rosso di Valtellina 2006
Nebbiolo
This is the entry level but very good quality. It does not aim to be the next ultimate red wine. Fruit, flower and some spices.

Grumello Rocca De Piro 2004
Nebbiolo > 95 / Brugnola and Rossola
2004 was not a good year according to the producer. The wine is not ready but you can tell that it will not let you down in three/four years. Fruits, berries and flowers, some wood taste is present. Probably not to drink yet.
***+
Grumello Rocca De Piro 2002
Nebbiolo > 95 / Brugnola and Rossola
Now :) two years older than the previous one but this wine is one step above. Flowers and berries are getting darker, lots of spices. The wine is a little shy after you have it in your glass wait for few minutes.
****+
Grumello Buon Consiglio Riserva 1999
Nebbiolo > 95 / Brugnola and Rossola
We are approaching to the top but I was expecting a little more from this wine. Probably nine years are not enough, the wine has still a lot of acidity. The dark is getting intense here with more balsamic notes coming out.
****
Sassella Vigna Regina Riserva 1999
Nebbiolo > 95 / Pinot Noir and Rossola
I don't know why you should expect the best wine at the end. However this is the ultimate wine of the session, probably because it comes from the Sassella area, but this is what I expect from a wine from Valtellina, or if you prefer, a wine from a mountain. Red and dark berries, spices, flowers, soil, graphite. Long ageing.
*****

And, in my humble opinion, all the wines not to be served to a temperature above 18C
